Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
